A DRIVER found himself slapped with a jaw-dropping $143,000 fine after parking in front of his own home for almost three decades.

A car enthusiast with a small collection of vehicles was asked to pay up after he was taken to court.

"I'm very stressed out," Greg Daniels, a homeowner in Austin, Texas, told the Austin American-Statesman in 2019.

"It was not immediately apparent that his existence was to be ruled by a dictator-of-the-month club."

Daniels owned seven cars – a Mercedes, a Cadillac, a Chevy, and four Mazda Miatas.

A 1986 Miata was the center of a 2003 lawsuit judgment between Daniels and his HOA.

He said he started parking the Miata on the lawn when he purchased the home in 1991.

The Miata was parked in the shade under an oak tree on Daniels' lawn in 2002.

He had moved the car into the driveway after the initial lawsuit.

Daniels claimed in a court filing he had moved the car "approximately seven feet onto the driveway (less the benefit of shade) where it has remained ever since, without further protest."

However, the HOA declared the car's previous lawn space "unsightly" and fined the homeowner for the parking placement.

The lawsuit ended with $30,000 worth of fines for Daniels.

By 2019, he had not paid the fines, the publication reported.

The fines ballooned to $143,363.16 fine after years of appeals.

The fine included the legal fees incurred by the HOA, the parking fine, and years of interest.

"They're all relatively cheap cars," Daniels told the publication.

"To me, money is something that I pretty much like to use as little as possible. I don't spend much of it. And I don't feel like I want to go out and make a killing because I need to be a millionaire or multi-millionaire. It's not my thing."

Daniels worried he would have to mortgage his paid-for home to make the six-figure payment.

However, negotiations with the HOA and the homeowner came to a different conclusion.

Daniels and the HOA agreed to three $25,000 installments in late 2019 and early 2020, the Austin American-Statesman later reported.

The agreement also required Daniels to repaint his house, fix a cosmetic issue in his garage, and replace his mailbox.

"My plan is to pursue legislation that will ensure that ordinary people will not get subjected to insane and totally unnecessary legal expenses for petty issues that have no need for litigation," he told the publication after the negotiated fines.
