How Pope Leo XIV is affecting the college basketball betting marketNew Foto - How Pope Leo XIV is affecting the college basketball betting market

The election of a new pope is always a massive world news event, and CardinalRobert Francis Prevost being elected as the first American pope— he'll go by Pope Leo XIV — is even more newsworthy. But usually part of the news coverage doesn't have to do with withthe new pope's sports fandomor how he is impacting sports betting markets. However, Prevost was born in Chicago and graduated from Villanova in 1977, which has led bettors to back the Wildcats to win their first college basketball title since 2018. Villanova (80-1 odds atBetMGM) had less than 1% of all wagers to win the 2025-26 national championship at BetMGM before Prevost was elected, but in the past 24 hours, the Wildcats are now responsible for 22% of the total wagers in the pool. Villanova has missed the NCAA tournament each of the past three seasons, so winning the title is certainly a leap of faith. Duke (+900), Purdue (10-1) and Houston (11-1) are the teams with the best odds currently to win the 2025-26 title at BetMGM. At other sportsbooks, Villanova has received more action than all other college basketball teams combined and is now the second-most bet team behind Purdue. A parlay of Villanova to win the national championship, the Chicago Cubs to win the World Series and the Chicago Bears to win the Super Bowl has also been popular. But that may be a misguided endeavor, as it appears Pope Leo XIV very well could be a White Sox fan. The White Sox certainly need all the help they can get.

Nats' Paul DeJong relieved his vision wasn't affected by pitch to face that broke multiple bonesNew Foto - Nats' Paul DeJong relieved his vision wasn't affected by pitch to face that broke multiple bones

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nationals third baseman Paul DeJong said Friday he was relieved that his vision wasn't affected when he suffered a broken nose, orbital and orbital floor from a pitch that hit him in the face last month. DeJong had surgery to repair the fractures and has been cleared for non-baseball activities. The nine-year veteran is hoping to be back in Washington's lineup before the All-Star break. The 31-year-old was hit by a pitch from Pittsburgh's Mitch Keller on April 15. "That was amazing for me to not have too much of a vision problem," DeJong said before Washington began a three-game series against St. Louis. "Having the surgery go well also, I mean, I trusted the surgeon and I knew my nose was going to be fixable. It was more just making sure my vision was OK because of how important that is for this sport. So, I'm thankful that things could have been a lot worse." DeJong, who signed with the Nationals as a free agent in February, can do exercises like biking and air squats but has not yet been cleared to lift weights. He spoke about what it might feel like to face live pitching again after his ordeal. "I think it's different than any injury that I have ever had, so it's hard for me to say how it's going to feel," DeJong said. "It's going to take some trust but I think the physical moment with the C-flap (on the batting helmet) will give me some confidence staying in there fearlessly and take my at-bat like I always would." ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb
