The initiative aims to build a "garden village" on 1,000 acres of open land between the cities of Knowle and Wickham.&

The Welborne improvement will embrace 6,000 homes, schools, outlets, green areas, business and healthcare amenities situated near the South Downs Nationwide Park and the Hampshire coast.

He stated: "I was a Nimby. When this was announced some 18 years in the past, I was absolutely opposed to it.

"But we've decreased the quantity of houses – it's come down from 10,000 to 6,000 – and we've vastly expanded the infrastructure and the green spaces, and the whole lot else.

"I faced the selection of, do I attempt to object and finally fail, or do I become involved and make it one of the best I can?"

It is stated the key improvement will primarily create a city between Southampton and Portsmouth.
